The capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., is a popular international destination for tourists and meeting place for heads of government. The streets of Washington D.C. are organized on a "grid" system. Streets that run east-to-west generally are designated by letters, similarly, streets that run north-to-south are designated by numbers. The Capitol serves as the starting point for this street system. Top sites to visit while in Washington are too numerous to list, but one may start with the U.S. Capitol, the White House, Ford Theatre Museum, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Washington National Cathedral, Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, National Archives and Records (Declaration of Independence, etc.). The Museum of Natural History, National Zoo, and The National Air and Space Museum are popular museums of the Smithsonian Institute. Check Museums, Monuments and Art Galleries for a more complete listing. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, National Theatre, and Discovery Theatre are some of the top theatre destinations listed in the Cultural and Civic Centers section of the guide. Brief history of the city of Washington: The idea that the federal government should be placed on federal land rather than in a U.S. state was proposed by Alexander Hamilton in 1790. The honor of selecting the site went to George Washington. In 1800, the federal government moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. and became home to John Adams, the first president to hold office there. The first Capitol building, White House and several other federal buildings were burned by the British in the the War of 1812. Reconstruction of these buildings was completed in 1819.
