The National Mall, focus of visitors to the DC area, is famous for its 28 monuments and memorials and the 3,700 Japanese cherry trees that grace the Tidal Basin and Hains Point.  Commissioned by George Washington, the 2 1/2 acre of parkland is bound on different sides by the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Memorial Bridge, the Washington Monument, Constitution Gardens, the United States Capitol, the White House, and many of the Smithsonian Institute museums and galleries including the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum.  The National Mall is the stage for national expressions of remembrance, observance and protest, and is one of the most heavily visited and photographed places in the world.
